Anxiety [Poem]

I am fine
but my heart
is in knots
stray thought-struck
held captive
by an over-thought

Fast-fraying fingers
pull at knots
to loosen their grip
but they tighten
and fear greets me
with a kiss

Nothing is wrong
why do I feel like this?

I wrote this poem from a prompt in dVerse, the virtual pub for poets. The prompt calls for the writer to write a poem of exactly 44 words, not including the title, and including the word “knot” in some form.

  1. Your quadrille resonates with me, Evan, especially the way we can fine one moment and the next be stray thought-struck’ and tied up with panic. I love the alliterative ‘fast-fraying fingers’, which sound fearful and nervous, and the phrase ‘fear greets me with a kiss’.

  2. A powerful capture of the feeling….in words. If only we could capture it and send it to the moon. I have experienced it socially but I empathize with those who deal with this daily and unexpectedly.

  3. The anxiety, I can feel it! The stirring, especially when nothing is wrong and nothing should be wrong, right, so why am I feeling this way? THAT feeling, in all its essence, was communicated powerfully and it hits you deeply. An amazing take on the prompt.
